29 th November 2010 – Cambridge Cookery School is to host the regional final of The Red Tractor Mmmake it with Mince Challenge 2010 on 3rd December 2010. Fronted by James Martin, this is a cookery competition for 11-16 year olds, that encourages entrants to cook creatively, but also on a budget with one of the country’s most popular ingredients.

Cambridge Cookery School’s new state-of-the-art kitchen has been chosen as the ideal setting for the Cook-Off. Six regional hopefuls will cook and be judged by James on the day one will then go forward to the final and have a chance of becoming National Champion. James Martin said “I’ve been blown away by the standards of entries we’ve received. The shortlisted entries are really strong and I’m convinced we’ve found more than a few culinary stars.” He continues, “I can’t wait for the cook-offs in December… This competition encourages kids to experiment in the kitchen and develop their food skills. It is something that I am really proud to be part of.”

Cambridge Cookery School was delighted to be involved with the project which was launched to encourage young people to get cooking.”Educating and inspiring children to cook is central to the school’s ethos” said Tine Roche, Head Chef of the Cambridge Cookery School, “We believe that giving teenagers and young adults a solid foundation in a full range of cookery skills is essential for their future health and happiness. We are delighted to be involved in the contest. And I am looking forward to seeing what the young people can produce.”. The School runs a range of successful classes under the banner ‘Food for Life’ that link in the key elements of nutrition, budget, sustainability and seasonality and mirror the aims of the competition.

Background

Cambridge Cookery School was established in 2008. The School provides an exciting modern programme of cookery courses for every level and age of cook. The School opened its new premises in September 2010 and with the support of both local and national brands has been able to build a state-of-the-art facility that is one of the best equipped in the country. It is fast-earning a reputation as a different and exciting venue for hosting corporate events – from team-building to entertaining clients.

Educating children from a young age is crucial as the School believes culinary skills learnt early can be maintained for life. The School has established relationships with local schools including The Perse and Hill’s Road Sixth Form College to provide enrichment programmes for their students.

Tine Roche is Head Chef of the school. Tine trained as a chef at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London. She has developed a strong reputation locally and nationally as an engaging, warm and inspiring teacher, as well as a highly regarded chef who has catered for many prestigious events. Tine Roche is originally from Scandinavia, but has lived in the UK for over 20 years. Her upbringing in rural Sweden has shaped her approach to food. She is consequently very keen to teach seasonal cooking, as well as encouraging people to cook resourcefully and with minimum waste. She is passionate about teaching people that good home-cooked food need not be time-consuming or laborious, and that traditional skills like baking, can be integrated into our busy lives. Popular courses include Bread Making, Easy Entertaining, Seasonal Italian, French Bistro Classics, Friday Night Cookery Club and Supper Club.
